Its common knowledge that the Chinese government has been persecuting Christians for decades. In recent years the ruling Chinese Communist Party (CCP) has made headlines for attacking religious people of any faith in the country. According to a 2022 U.S. Government report, “The government [of China] continued its multiyear campaign of “Sinicization” to bring all religious doctrine and practice in line with CCP doctrine, which included requiring clergy of all faiths to attend political indoctrination sessions and suggesting content for sermons that emphasized loyalty to the CCP and the state.”1
In July a U.S. Congressman wrote an article to reminded Americans of one part of the plan to rid China of Christians.2 The CCP is rewriting the Bible in an attempt to brainwash people into worshiping the CCP. This is an old tactic Satan has used many times to trick humans into believing a lie so they would turn away from the Lord. The prophet Isaiah warned about this when the people of his day told the religious leaders to say what they wanted to hear instead of God’s Word. (Isaiah 30:10-11)
Therefore thus says the Holy One of Israel:
“Because you despise this [My] word,
And trust in oppression and perversity, And rely on them,
Therefore this iniquity shall be to you
Like a breach ready to fall,
A bulge in a high wall,
Whose breaking comes suddenly, in an instant.” (Isaiah 30:12-13)
This sounds like the CCP today. They hate the Bible because it declares the Lord is sovereign and should be worshipped instead of them. So they oppress Christians and perversely try to twist God’s Word to exalt themselves. Yet this sin has placed them in a dangerous place like a bulging wall that faces sudden destruction when it falls.
What Does This Have to do with You?
This not just a warning for an authoritarian regime that does not believe in human rights and persecutes religious people. This is a warning for everyone. Anyone who despises God’s Word is in danger. Isaiah also told us:
The grass withers, the flower fades,
But the word of our God stands forever. (Isaiah 40:8)
The Bible is permanent and one day everyone will be judged by it. (John 12:48) God’s Word will triumph and human schemes and words will fail. The Almighty said,
Look to Me, and be saved,
All you ends of the earth!
For I am God, and there is no other.
I have sworn by Myself;
The word has gone out of My mouth in righteousness,
And shall not return,
That to Me every knee shall bow,
Every tongue shall take an oath. (Isaiah 45:22-23)
The Lord is God alone, not the CCP nor you. He is the only Savior. He has decreed that everyone will bow to Him. This includes rulers like the CCP and regular people like you. We can bow today and have the Lord as our Savior or we can bow before His throne when He judges the sins of those who rejected Him. (Revelation 20:12) What choice will you make?
I hope you choose the Lord today. Then choose to pray for and support the suffering people of China. Petition your government to stand up for them. Tell businesses to stop supporting the CCP or they will lose you as a customer. If we don’t stand up for religious freedom around the world who will stand up for ours?
