You’ve probably heard something about a judgment coming one day, but how can you know for sure?
God is a just judge, And God is angry with the wicked every day. If he does not turn back, He will sharpen His sword; He bends His bow and makes it ready. He also prepares for Himself instruments of death; He makes His arrows into fiery shafts.” (Psalms 7:11-13)
David told us that the righteous Judge is preparing instruments to punish the wicked. A physical illustration may be seen when God told King Ahab that he would die in battle. Ahab didn’t believe God until,
a certain man drew a bow at random, and struck the king of Israel between the joints of his armor,” (I Kings 22:34a)
The archer wasn’t aiming at anything, but his arrow was God’s guided missile of judgment with Ahab’s name on it. Yes, the Lord has arrows of vengeance for the wicked and He is not afraid to use them.
But God shall shoot at them with an arrow; Suddenly they shall be wounded. (Psalm 64:7)
Friends, the arrows have already been shot. In fact, looking around today, one might say that the arrows of justice are beginning to reach their targets. As we saw, they are not indiscriminate but guided. However, there is One who is willing to step in front of the arrow that has your name on it.
Yet we esteemed Him stricken,
Smitten by God, and afflicted.
But He was wounded for our transgressions,
He was bruised for our iniquities (Isaiah 53:4b-5a)
Jesus came to save us from the arrows of justice demanded by our sin. You can come to Him today and be rescued from sin and its penalty so that you can say with the psalmist,
You shall not be afraid of the terror by night, Nor of the arrow that flies by day. (Psalm 91:5)
